Chapter Eight

Rick

With every day that passed, Rick could feel himself getting closer and closer to Janey and the kids. And, though he knew it was dangerous, it was just how he wanted it.

He couldn’t remember the last time that he had been around people who had made him feel so at home. Even back in Ogozia, he had a hard time bringing to mind anyone who had made him feel this at ease. Being around them felt easy in a way nothing else ever had before in his life, and he was already dreading the thought of having to leave them behind, having to give up on everything that they had started to share.

But he could live with that, as long as there was no actual end in sight. A full week had gone by and even his interfering mother hadn’t been able to stick her oar in and cause an upset. He had attended the meetings that he knew he had to, and had begun to feel like he could maybe stay here a little longer. Maybe he could make it work here, with Janey, with the children.

There was the question of his father’s debt, of course, and Rick knew he wasn’t going to get away with just brushing that off and hoping for the best. Everything that had happened so far, he knew he was going to have to work double-time to undo. He was still angry with his family for keeping something this big from him, but he knew he couldn’t get hung up on what had happened when he had to think about the future. Janey knew about the debt, and she was doing everything she could to try and lift the load from him, even though it was entirely his business to take care of.

But he had found a company who might be able to help him out. His father’s millions in debt had come from gambling addiction, and he was hoping there might be a chance to garner some relief based on the addictive nature of his spendings. It wasn’t fair, after all, to force his family and his country to bear the brunt of what he had done in his lifetime.

And now, of course, Rick had his own family to think about. There was no way in hell that he was going to let Rosie and Kieran deal with what his father had done, no way at all. He would take care of this, put it all behind them. He would break the contract with his fiancée’s father and all of this would be forgotten once and for all...

At least, that’s what he kept telling himself.

Of course, he knew he wasn’t going to be able to get out of it that easily. If Elliana had been willing to go so far to get what she wanted, the chances of her backing down all of a sudden were pretty slim. But Elliana would have to wait, because Rick suddenly had a whole life to think about here —and he wasn’t going to forget about it for her.
